Murcia: Where History, Innovation and Life Meet

Murcia is a vibrant Mediterranean capital where a thousand years of history coexist with a modern and welcoming dynamism. Under the June sun, the city invites you to enjoy its majestic Baroque heritage and a culture of squares that are always full of life. Known as the ‘Orchard of Europe,’ it offers exceptional cuisine that turns every break into a sensory experience. It is, in short, the perfect setting where academic rigour meets hospitality and well-being.

What to visit in the city

  • Cathedral of Santa María: A masterpiece of Spanish Baroque architecture. Its façade is a stone altarpiece that is unique in the world. Don't miss the opportunity to climb its tower (the second highest in Spain).
  • Real Casino de Murcia: Founded in 1847, it is an eclectic gem. Highlights include its Arab courtyard (with gold leaf), its carved wooden library and its lavish neo-baroque ballroom.
  • Santa Clara la Real Museum: Built on the site of a former 12th-century Arab palace. It preserves an Islamic pool and courtyard that are an oasis of peace in the commercial centre.
  • Salzillo Museum: Dedicated to the master of Baroque sculpture, Francisco Salzillo. His processional floats are world-famous for their realism.

Gastronomy

In June, produce from Murcia's vegetable gardens is at its best. Gastronomy here is a social ritual that takes place in the squares.

  • Plaza de las Flores: The iconic place for an ‘aperitif’.
  • Essentials: La Marinera (salad on a bread roll with anchovies), Zarangollo (scrambled courgette and onion) and Pastel de Carne (a medieval recipe made with thin puff pastry).
  • El Paparajote: The star dessert. A lemon leaf coated in sweet batter and cinnamon.
